On Leadership-Modern Day Nehemiah’s

JLL NEHEMIAH LESSON I

Step one Prayer

One of the most profound leadership lessons from Nehemiah is that every God-given assignment begins with prayer before it begins with action. When Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem were broken down and the gates burned with fire, he did not immediately rush to solve the problem. Instead, he sat down, wept, fasted, and prayed before God (Nehemiah 1:4).

In today’s marketplace, many believers are tempted to begin with strategy, networking, funding, qualifications, or human wisdom. Yet Nehemiah teaches us that prayer is not the last resort of a leader—it is the first responsibility of a leader.

As believers operating in business, education, healthcare, government, ministry, entrepreneurship, and corporate leadership, we face challenges that require more than skill and experience. We need divine wisdom, discernment, favour, and direction. Prayer positions us to receive Heaven’s blueprint before we engage earthly systems.

Nehemiah understood that rebuilding Jerusalem was not merely a construction project; it was a Kingdom assignment. Likewise, our careers, businesses, and leadership roles are not simply jobs—they are platforms through which God advances His purposes on earth.

Before Nehemiah approached King Artaxerxes, he approached the King of Kings. Before he gathered builders, he gathered revelation. Before he requested resources, he sought God’s presence.

For such a time as this, believers in the marketplace must resist the pressure to act impulsively and instead cultivate a lifestyle of prayer. Every major decision, business venture, promotion, partnership, investment, and leadership responsibility should be covered in prayer.

Colossians 3:23 reminds us that our work is ultimately unto the Lord. This means excellence is not driven merely by performance targets or public recognition but by a desire to honour God. Prayer aligns our hearts with God’s purposes and transforms our work from mere occupation into divine assignment.

When prayer becomes our first response:

  • We gain God’s perspective before making decisions.
  • We receive courage to face opposition.
  • We develop spiritual sensitivity and discernment.
  • We avoid unnecessary mistakes caused by haste.
  • We lead from a place of dependence on God rather than self-reliance.

Nehemiah’s success was not simply because he was a gifted administrator; it was because he was first a man of prayer. His leadership flowed from his relationship with God.

In a world filled with uncertainty, changing economies, workplace pressures, and increasing demands, God is calling marketplace believers to become modern-day Nehemiahs—leaders who pray first, listen carefully, and then act boldly according to God’s direction.

Reflection

Before seeking solutions, seek God.
Before building the vision, receive the vision.
Before speaking to people, speak to God.

Prayer is not preparation for the work—it is the work that prepares us for everything else.

JLL QUOTABLE QUOTES:”As a marketplace leader,  commit every decision, opportunity, and challenge to God in prayer. Let your leadership  glorify God bless others and produce lasting impact.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Nehemiah. Teach me to seek You first in every assignment, opportunity, and challenge. Help me to depend on Your wisdom rather than my own understanding. As I serve You in the marketplace, grant me discernment, favour, and courage to lead according to Your will. May my work glorify You and advance Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Declaration

I decree and declare that I am a believer who seeks God first in all things. I will not be led by fear, pressure, or human wisdom, but by the Spirit of God. My work is unto the Lord, and He directs my steps. I receive divine wisdom, favour, and discernment for every assignment entrusted to me. Like Nehemiah, I will pray first, lead faithfully, and accomplish God’s purposes for my generation. Amen.
